In the latest Manchester City news, Fernandinho insists they won’t ease off in their pursuit of the Premier League title after edging closer following Monday’s win over Stoke.
Pep Guardiola’s side are currently 16 points clear at the top of the table after a comfortable 2-0 win over Stoke at the bet365 Stadium in which David Silva bagged a brace.
City need just two more victories to clinch the Premier League crown and they could wrap up their second piece of silverware this season on April 7.
A trip to Everton is next up on the agenda for City and if they claim a fifth successive league victory at Goodison Park then they could seal the title at home to rivals Manchester United the following week.
Fernandinho returned to the starting lineup after recovering from a hamstring injury for the clash at Stoke and the Brazilian has warned his team mates about the danger of allowing complacency to slip into their game.
“We cannot deny we are close to winning the league but we have to keep working and keep focused, as we did since the first day, (going) game by game, step by step,” said Fernandinho.
“By working hard every day, every week, every game we are going to go get there.”
Guardiola has also urged his squad to continue fighting for every point and claims they must also keep their eye on the ball in the Champions League as they look to finish the season with three trophies.
“Everybody is always asking this question,” said Guardiola.
“But the important thing is on March 12, we have 81 points, that is a lot of points.
“We want to be champions. We need three wins, but we are able to do it with two (if City beat United).
“But before and after United, we have the (Champions League) quarter-finals, and at the moment that is the most important thing to focus on.
“I understand for the fans, okay, but the important thing is to be champions. When and where it doesn’t matter.”
