In the latest Manchester United news, boss Jose Mourinho has tipped Diogo Dalot to be a big hit at Old Trafford after his move from Porto was confirmed.
United have announced they have signed the defender from Porto on a five-year deal, with the option of a further year, as the 19-year-old becomes Mourinho’s first summer signing.
The Portugal Under-21 international has risen to prominence quickly as he only made his senior league debut in his home country earlier this year for Porto and only has eight first-team appearances under his belt in total.
Despite his apparent lack of experience, Mourinho believes the teenager, who has joined in a reported £19million deal, has all the attributes to be a star for United.
Mourinho told the club’s website: “Diogo is an extremely talented young defender with all the qualities to quickly become a great player for this club.
“He has all the attributes that a full-back needs: physicality, tactical intelligence and technical quality, combined with a Porto Academy mentality which prepares players for the maturity they need at the professional level.
“In his age group, he is the best full-back in Europe and we all believe he has a bright future ahead of him at Manchester United.”
Dalot believes he’s joining “the biggest club in the world” and cannot wait to get started under his countryman Mourinho.
He said: “Joining Manchester United is an unbelievable opportunity for me. I have grown up in Porto’s Academy and I am so thankful for everything they have done for me. But the chance of coming to the biggest club in the world is something I just couldn’t turn down.
“I’m excited about working with Jose Mourinho and learning everything I can from such a successful coach. I am looking forward to playing alongside the fantastic players in the squad.”
Dalot will hope to play a key role for United in the 2018-19 Premier League season, for which they are 6/1 with Coral to win outright.
