In the latest Manchester United news, Jose Mourinho says Romelu Lukaku will be given until the last possible minute to prove his fitness ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final against Chelsea.
The Belgium international has been sidelined since United’s 2-1 win over Arsenal at the end of April, missing the final three games of the Premier League season.
It was expected the former Chelsea striker would be back to face his old club at Wembley, but Mourinho has now raised the possibility that he could miss the encounter.
The Portuguese coach did have better news on the availability of Anthony Martial, confirming the Frenchman had overcome a problem which forced him to sit out the final day win over Watford last weekend.
Mourinho said: “Martial is fit, but Lukaku – we have to wait until the last moment.
“I don’t want to lie to you and say he doesn’t play and then he plays, or vice versa – so we have to wait.”
The FA Cup presents both United and Chelsea with their final chance to claim a trophy this season, with United having finished runners-up to Manchester City in the Premier League, while Chelsea’s title defence never got going as they ended the campaign in fifth.
Despite having won two trophies last term – the EFL Cup and Europa League – Mourinho believes United’s 2017-18 campaign has been more successful due to their improvement in league position from sixth to second.
The ex-Chelsea boss says he therefore does not feel his team need to win the FA Cup to call their campaign a success.
“People can do they want, analyse how they want to analyse,” he said. “I can also analyse the way I want to analyse and the way I think is fair to analyse.
“Do I consider the season good or bad because of one match? When I analyse the work I did, the effort I put in, when I analyse everything we all did in the club, including the most important persons at the club – the players?
“I am not going to analyse because of one – very important – match. I know what they [the players] did, I know the effort they put in, I know the positive things and the negative things.”
Manchester United are 5/6 with Betfair to lift the FA Cup, with Mourinho seeking his 12th cup triumph.
