In the latest Manchester City news, Sergio Aguero will undergo a fitness test on Friday to determine whether or not he can face Manchester United.
Pep Guardiola’s men, who could clinch the title against their fierce rivals with a victory this weekend, go into the derby on the back of a humbling 3-0 loss at Liverpool in the Champions League.
Aguero sat out the Anfield fixture with the knee injury he picked up in training a month ago although City are hopeful the Argentine could be available on Saturday.
“I don’t know right now [whether he will play],” said Guardiola. “We have training on Friday afternoon and will see how his physical condition is.”
Should Aguero miss out then Gabriel Jesus will once again lead the line against the Red Devils and he is 13/8 with Paddy Power to score anytime at the Etihad Stadium.
The Brazilian was far from his best at Liverpool in midweek, admitting himself that it was one of his poorest performances in a blue shirt.
Guardiola isn’t too concerned about Jesus’ below-par showing and is confident he will learn from the disappointment.
“He is so strong,” said the City boss. “He is 21 years old. It is the first time he played at Anfield, it is the first time he played in a knockout game in the Champions League.
“You have to live those situations to be better players. You always suffer the first time. The next time will be better.”
Winning the title against their local rivals would be a sweet moment for City, but Guardiola has insisted his players must treat it as just another game rather than get caught up in the significance of what a win would mean.
“It’s a coincidence because it’s the derby but it doesn’t matter. We just have to be focused on what we have to do to win the game,” he added.
