In the latest Liverpool news, boss Jurgen Klopp insists his side are fully focused on Sunday’s Premier League clash with Brighton.
The Reds will head into the contest at Anfield with work still to be done if they want to guarantee a top-four finish and, with it, a place in next season’s Champions League.
Klopp’s side will start the day fourth in the standings, two points clear of Chelsea, so a victory would be good enough for a top-four finish, although even a draw should see them home given their superior goal difference.
Even if Liverpool were to miss out on a top-four finish then they will still have an opportunity to qualify for next season’s Champions League by beating Real Madrid in the final of Europe’s premier club competition later this month.
Indeed, the showpiece match in Kiev could prove something of a distraction for Liverpool ahead of their match with Brighton, but Klopp insists his side will only be focused on the task at hand when they play host to Chris Hughton’s team.
“As long as we are not 100 per cent in the Champions League, this last game is the most important of the season,” Klopp told Sky Sports.
Klopp is certainly wary of the threat his side will face when they take on a Brighton team that have comfortably survived in the top-flight and still harbour hopes of finishing in the top-half of the table.
He added: “Nobody thinks about the Champions League final, how it will be, ifs and if nots at the moment.
“It’s only the Brighton game and they deserve the focus we can have. They have played an outstanding season, Chris has done an amazing job.”
Only following the conclusion of Sunday’s game will Liverpool be able to fully focus on the Champions League final and the Reds are priced at 11/10 with Sky Bet to lift the trophy for a sixth time on May 26.
