Suspended Gambler Sorsby Won't Sue NFL

It's wait until next year as far as quarterback Brendan Sorsby's pro football career is concerned. Sorsby wa rejected in his bid to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft. A confessed gambling addict, Sorsby has decided not to challenge the NFL's decision in court. He won't be eligible to enter the NFL until after he goes through the 2027 NFL Draft process.
Texas Tech QB Sorsby was ruled ineligible by the NCAA for his senior season after it was discovered that he'd made thousands of sports bets valued at over $90,000, including placing bets on his own team when he was a QB at Indiana.
Sorsby decides to take his medicine
Following his ineligible ruling from the NCAA, Sorsby took his case to court. His legal team won him an injunction. It would have permitted him to play the 2026 NCAA football season at QB for the Red Raiders. However, when Sorsby saw the problems that decision was going to create for Texas Tech in disciplinary action from the NCAA and Big 12 Conference, he wound up dropping his suit.
There was speculation in some circles that the QB might also take the NFL to court. It was thought he might sue over being denied entry to the NFL Supplemental Draft. Sorsby has decided that he doesn't want to go there.
“I accept 100% responsibility for my actions,” Sorsby said in an Instagram post. “I did not have control of my gambling problem, and it took getting caught to realize that, but it was truly the best thing that could have happened to me.
"The news about the supplemental draft changes nothing about my recovery journey. I will continue to take it one day at a time. Focusing on making myself better throughout this process and making sure to share what I have learned and will continue to learn with others going forward. I am fully committed to being the best version of myself that I can be while getting ready for the 2927 (NFL) draft.
NFLPA doesn't go to bat for embattled QB
He submitted his application for the 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft just three days before the season. The NFL denied his petition.
“The issues presented by your Petition are too significant, and too closely tied to the League’s core integrity interests, to permit meaningful review within the timeline presented,” NFL attorney Lawrence P. Ferazani Jr. wrote in a letter to Sorsby, reported the Associated Press.
The NFL issued a memo. It was noting that neither Sorsby nor the NFLPA would be seeking legal action to change his playing status.
"We have confirmed with the NFLPA and Brendan Sorsby that there will be no further litigation regarding his entry into the NFL -- and that instead, Mr. Sorsby will focus on his preparation for entry into the League via the 2027 NFL Draft," ESPN reported the memo reading. "For purposes of League and CBA rules, Mr. Sorsby will be considered a 'Draft-Eligible' player for the 2027 NFL Draft.
"Mr. Sorsby will not be eligible to sign an NFL Player Contract until the completion of the 2027 NFL Draft."
The NFL plans to investigate Sorsby
Once Sorsby does enter the NFL, he'll be under scrutiny. League officials acknowledged that there would be an investigation into his gambling activity while a college football player. Sorsby was betting on his own team 40 times while a QB at Indiana. He also made bets while under the legal age to bet.
The NFL won't punish him for his college misconduct. However, his prior offences would be under consideration were he committing further gambling offences while an NFL player.
