NFL Executive Appealing Gambling Suspension

Arizona Cardinals executive Ryan Gold is appealing his NFL suspension for his role in a sports betting scandal. Gold is accused of providing confidential, nonpublic insider information to sports bettors about the Cardinals' 2026 NFL Draft picks before the picks were officially announced. The suspension was issued following a league investigation into the matter. The NFL did not say who was supplied the insider information by Gold.
Gold, the director of college scouting for the Cardinals, is also accused of participating in parlay wagers on NFL and college football games. He was suspended indefinitely by the league for violating the NFL's gambling policy.
The Cardinals are supporting this NFL decision
Citing the clarity of the league policy on employees gambling on the league, the Cardinals threw their full support behind the NFL investigation and suspension of Gold.
"The NFL's policies and expectations for all employees are clear, comprehensive, and consistently communicated," read a statement released by the team. "We fully support the league's decision in this matter, which involves a single employee.
"Our focus remains on preparing for the start of training camp next week and the 2026 season."
The NFL investigation included interviews with relevant people. There was also an examination of electronic records.
In its own statement, the NFL indicated that Gold's actions left the league with no other choice. They had to issue an indefinite suspension.
"The Gambling Policy, which is annually reviewed with all NFL personnel, strictly prohibits anyone in the NFL from participating in or facilitating any form of sports gambling, and from providing third parties non-public information," the NFL said in its statement, according to reporting by the Associated Press. "Although there is no reason to believe the integrity of any NFL game was affected, the League takes any violation of the Gambling Policy with the utmost seriousness."
Gold is in his 13th season with the Cardinals. He was promoted to director of college scouting in June 2025. Gold spent the previous three years (2022-24) as the assistant director of college scouting. Before that, he worked for four seasons (2018-21) as a college scouting coordinator.
Gold intends to launch an appeal of his NFL suspension
Through his attorney, Gold is indicating that he will vigorously defend his innocence on all charges.
"Ryan Gold has been an outstanding NFL executive for over a decade," Gold's attorney, Mike Caspino, told ESPN. "The accusations made by the league regarding his participation in prohibited gambling activities are blatantly false.
"We have demanded an appeal, and we look forward to clearing his good name."
Caspino states emphatically that it would be impossible for Gold to tip off any bettors about the Cardinals' impending draft picks. That's because no one was keeping him in the loop. They insist that only team owner Michael Bidwill and general manager Monti Ossenfort knew the names of the team's draftees before there was any public announcement of the picks.
Gold claims that it was his wife who was making the bets
Through Caspino, Gold suggests that it was his wife who was placing the football parlay bets. According to them, she was making $10 weekly parlay bets with a group of high school friends. Gold had no involvement in the wagering.
The NFL has strict gambling policies for players and team and league personnel. Those rules state that players must not place any bet on NFL football, throw, fix, or manipulate any NFL game or event. It's also against league policy to share confidential, nonpublic information regarding any NFL game, player, or event with any third party.
