New York Sports Betting Bill Would Require Sportsbooks to Void Bets Due To Injuries

A new sports betting bill introduced before the New York State Assembly would require that sportsbooks refund all wagers that are impacted by an injury. Under New York state legislation Bill A11414, sports betting sites would need to void wagers on players who are injured or withdraw from games.
Traditionally, sportsbooks would grade these bets as losses. In-game injuries or pre-game scratches have always been viewed as accepted betting risks with no refunds. New York Assemblymember Jordan Wright introduced this legislation aimed at standardizing injury rules. If passed, sportsbooks would be legally required to automatically void prop bets and other wagers tied to an injured player.
Another bill aimed at increasing consumer protections for New York sports bettors
Bill A11414 is seeking to include consumer-friendly voiding rules on all sports bets that involve an injury. This would be covering all player prop wagers, and any other wagering that could be proven to have been impacted by a key injury.
The bill is directing the gaming commission to implement rules and regulations about fair play in sports wagering for professional sports in instances where a player is suffers an early injury and isn't returning for the game. It is designed to offer protection in circumstances that are beyond the control of an authorized sports bettor that would compromise the validity or settlement of a sports wager.
It wouldn't only be injuries that could result in the refunding of a wager. Other factors to be getting consideration would be if an athlete isn't participating or withdraws from an event. A statistical error or scoring correction occurring that alters the outcome of a bet would be another factor. The bill is also giving state gambling authorities the power to add other items to the list as they feel necessary.
Lawmakers are touting his bill as a fair play measure
The application of the fair play policy that would apply in these instances would go into effect immediately. Such an application would be happening consistently in a nondiscriminatory manner. All actions applying to these refunds would be getting a clear definition in the terms and conditions section of a sports betting site.
Recent betting scandals in the NBA involving the insider trading of privileged information by sources working for NBA teams played a role in this new bill proposal.
The introduction of the bill was happening on May 15. The bill is currently under referral to the Assembly Racing and Wagering Committee. If passed into law, Bill A11414 would go into effect within 180 days of that approval.
In the past, it was entirely up to each sports betting site's discretion whether to refund any wager affected by injuries or other uncontrollable factors. Under this bill, the sports betting sites must explain their policies clearly when they take such action. They must be doing so within 48 hours of the action taking place. Sportsbooks must be giving a complete response to answer to any complaints from a sports bettoor about a bet payout. They must take this action within 10 business days of the filing of the complaint.
Several active New York bills are seeking to change how sports betting works in the state
The New York State Assembly is considering a litany of bills that will impact how sports betting works in the state if passed into law. Bill A 9343 would ban all forms of live betting. Another bill, A 7962, would limit how often a bettor can fund their sports betting account and when sportsbooks can run ads.
Another bill would place restrictions on billboard advertising for sports betting sites. There's also a bill that would ban all mobile sports betting on college campuses in New York.
