NCAA Division III Softens Stance Against Sports Betting Violations

NCAA Division III schools are softening their stance regarding the punishment they will mete out to student-athletes who commit sports-betting violations. The DIII Management Council approved an amendment to the guidelines on reinstating student-athletes who commit sports-betting violations. The council’s action will allow for penalty reductions for a student-athlete who commits sports-betting violations. This is provided it is the student-athlete’s first violation, and the violation does not involve integrity concerns. The student-athlete must also partake in appropriate clinical evaluation or support.
It is important to remember that this ruling only involves NCAA Division III schools. There's been no change to punishments for sports betting violations issued by Division I schools.
NCAA Division III amends its sports betting violations punishment
The decision to amend how NCAA Division III schools will punish student-athletes caught involved in sports betting violations was made during recent meetings of the DIII Management Council. In one sense, there hasn't been much of a change to how DIII schools will deal with anyone caught engaging in sports betting activities such as point shaving. The punishment remains permanent loss of all remaining regular season and postseason eligibility in all sports.
That's the legislated minimum penalty for a student-athlete who engaged in activities designed to influence the outcome of an intercollegiate contest or in an effort to affect win-loss margins. It also covers any player who participates in any sports wagering activity involving the student-athlete's institution.
For players caught participating in any form of sports wagering activity through the internet, a bookmaker, or a parlay card, the student-athlete will be ineligible for all regular season and postseason competition for a minimum period of one year from the date of the institution's determination that a violation had occurred.
If there is a determination of the student-athlete's involvement in a later violation of any portion of these regulations, the student-athlete will permanently lose all remaining regular season and postseason eligibility in all sports.
A reinstatement path has been outlined for student-athlete involvement in sports betting
NCAA DIII officials want to retain a hard line against sports betting violators. Yet they are also in the mood to recognize reconciliation and maintain fairness in its rulings. That's led to the development of a student-athlete reinstatement policy covering players caught betting on sports. They are calling this a student-first philosophy.
With respect to a violation, the DIII committee and the NCAA student-athlete reinstatement staff are willing to attempt to place the student-athlete back in the position he or she would have been prior to the violation occurring. However, this must be done while maintaining the integrity of the Association's values.
The committee and staff will conduct their work by evaluating the totality of the circumstances surrounding each case. They will weigh each case on its individual merit. Two instances will still result in permanent loss of eligibility. This would be when more than $500 was bet. Also, when an effort was being made to influence the outcome of a game,
There's another condition for any student-athlete to be considered for reinstatement from a sports-betting ban. They must repay all winnings from any gambling done.
Sorsby's case wouldn't be covered by this ruling
These decisions will have no impact on the most well-known sports betting case involving an NCAA player in recent years. Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby was declared permanently ineligible by the NCAA earlier this year.
An investigation found that Sorsby made thousands of bets totaling more than $90,000 on a variety of sports. It includes bets he placed on his own team while a QB at Indiana.
As an NCAA DI player, this change wouldn't help Sorsby earn reinstatement.
