The Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) launched the Don't Let Gambling Call Plays campaign. This program is designed to place emphasis on responsible gambling. It also advises Floridians to make informed choices when it comes to legal sports betting. The campaign talks about the dangers of problem gambling, while at the same time offering helpful advice to both recognize and avoid falling into this dangerous place.

The reason behind this campaign is to help sports bettors in Florida avoid developing the habits that can lead to problem gambling. At the same time, instructions on how to get treatment and counseling for a gambling problem are also being made easily accessible.

The FGCC is paying special attention to college-aged sports bettors

The football season is in its second month. Far and away the most popular betting sport in North America, Florida and college football go together seamlessly, like peanut butter and jelly.

That being the case, the FGCC, the state regulator for sports betting, is using the Don't Let Gambling Call Plays campaign as a subtle reminder to football bettors to make informed choices when it comes to legal sports betting. However, they are placing special emphasis on college-aged sports bettors.

With students at all 12 state universities in Florida now back on campus for the fall semester, the FGCC is encouraging students to make smart choices if they choose to place a wager.

“Football brings excitement and fun to our state and communities, and for some, the thrill of placing a wager,” FGCC Chair Julie Brown said in a press release. Brown pointed out that she is also the mother of a Division 1 football player.

“For young college students, it is the first time they have managed a personal budget, and we hear about many who bet beyond their resources. We encourage everyone to play responsibly if they choose to gamble.”

This Florida campaign emphasizes how to get help for a gambling problem

Certainly, the emphasis of this campaign is to teach the correct habits of responsible gambling, especially to those who are new to sports betting. There is an outline of responsible gambling tips that anyone who chooses to bet can follow.

Included with these tips are setting a betting budget and sticking to it. Players should decide how much they can afford to lose before ever placing a bet. Players are also encouraged to use the available tools. These include deposit limits, self-exclusion options, and activity tracking to help bettors stay in control.

Finally, it's vital to recognize the signs when gambling is becoming a problem. If betting is causing distress or impacting daily life, seek help immediately. Florida’s Playwise helpline provides free, confidential support at 1-833-PLAYWISE (1-833-752-9947) or Playwise.org.

Players are encouraged to bet with their head, not over it

The FGCC isn't looking to prevent young people from betting. They merely want to provide the educational tools to learn how to bet responsibly. This program is also about how to establish when there might be a problem and providing an off-ramp to quickly get to the resources that help someone with a gambling problem.

"We are thrilled to welcome students, alumni, and fans from around the state to cheer on their favorite Florida teams,” State University System of Florida Chancellor Ray Rodrigues said. “While attending football games and other fall sports matches are an important part of the student experience, we encourage students to be responsible with sports gambling.

"If a student feels they are struggling with gambling, or notices a friend struggling, we urge them to seek help before it becomes a crisis.”
