Frankie Replaced for Redkirk July Cup bid

Connections of Australian sprint star Redkirk Warrior have decided to return to a tried and tested partnership and will reunite their horse with regular rider Regan Bayliss in the Darley July Cup following his disappointing run under Frankie Dettori at Royal Ascot in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

Tom Dabernig, who trains the recent dual Group 1 Australian winner alongside David and Ben Hayes, was quick to point out that no blame for the eclipse of their star at Ascot is being laid at Dettori’s door, they simply feel the horse had an off-day and that having his regular rider in the plate for the Group 1 Newmarket sprint on July 14 might spark him back to something close to his best form.

The seven-year-old showed plenty of early dash at Ascot in the top-class six furlong event, but was in trouble a long way from home (see below, red cap) and eventually trailed in just 10th behind Aidan O’Brien’s ex-Australian inmate Merchant Navy.

“What we can put it down to is overseas travel. Arriving there, all the signs were he travelled well, he was eating, hydrated, we were happy with his work,” Daberning explained on RSN 927’s Racing Pulse. “We did his final piece of work a week out from the race. You could see from the 500m mark, we were clearly in trouble, and he didn’t put his run up. Clearly the travel had an effect.

“After the race, we did all the normal testing of bloods, scoping, and it all came back normal and clear. He’ll continue on at Newmarket with the possibility of running in the July Cup on the 14th at Newmarket, which is 1200m down the straight. And we can confirm that Regan Bayliss has been booked for the ride. There was no knock on Frankie Dettori. He was probably a victim of the horse not performing on the day. Regan’s got an outstanding record on him, winning three Group 1’s.”

Redkirk Warrior is a top priced 16/1 with BetStars to redeem himself in the July Cup, a race for which Charlie Appleby’s King’s Stand Stakes winner Blue Point currently heads the ante-post market at 5/1 with Bet365, just ahead of Diamond Jubilee Stakes winner Merchant Navy (6/1 with Totesport).
