The wide receiver position has become particularly vital due to the rise of wide-open passing offenses. The importance of high-level pass-catchers has made it difficult for teams to succeed with subpar receiver groups.

Teams often require at least two primary wide receivers to display a strong passing offense. Meanwhile, others might be hindered by lackluster teammates.

NFL’s best WR duos

Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle of the Miami Dolphins had an impressive debut season together. They have a total of 194 receptions, 3,066 yards and 15 touchdowns. Their exceptional speed and ability to create matchup problems make them a nightmare for defensive coordinators.

The Philadelphia Eagles have solid WR depth in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. They surpassed doubts about their ability to thrive together in a Jalen Hurts-led offense. These former SEC receivers proved their worth as they contributed to the team’s high-powered offense. They recorded 183 receptions, 2,692 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns.

The Seattle Seahawks wide receiver duo of DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett has often been overlooked in recent years. However, they continued to excel even with underdog QB Geno Smith at the helm. Lockett consistently delivers 1,000-yard seasons, while Metcalf displayed consistency with his 90 receptions, 1,033 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

Mike Evans and Chris Godwin of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers form a formidable pairing. Evans has always succeeded in achieving a 1,000-yard season in his nine-year NFL career. Godwin has also established himself as one of the league’s premier slot receivers. He had an impressive 104 receptions and 1,023 receiving yards.

Underperforming WR duos

While the Buffalo Bills have Stefon Diggs as WR1, the team’s WR2 hasn’t shown much progress in closing the gap. Diggs continues to excel as a top-level performer with his 108 receptions and 1,044 receiving yard. Still, Gabe Davis has struggled to establish himself as a reliable and consistent WR2. Last season, he only had 48 receptions and 836 receiving yards.

Dallas Cowboys’ CeeDee Lamb emerged as a true number-one receiver, particularly after Amari Cooper’s departure. Lamb recorded impressive statistics in the previous season with 107 catches, 1,359 yards and nine touchdowns. Yet his new duo Brandin Cooks has been underwhelming. Cooks only accumulated 699 yards in 13 games with the Houston Texans, but he is expected to have a strong comeback season with the Cowboys.
