In the latest Croatia news, striker Mario Mandzukic says he is looking for his country to perform strongly at the World Cup after getting off to a winning start against Nigeria.
Mandzukic and the Croats secured a comfortable 2-0 victory against a poor Nigeria side on Saturday evening.
Zlatko Delic’s men never really needed to get out of second gear to secure the victory as an unfortunate own goal from Oghenekaro Etebo put Croatia ahead of the half hour mark.
Mandzukic then won a penalty in the second half after being wrestled to the ground by Nigerian defender William Ekong before Luka Modric stepped up to slot the spot kick away.
With Argentina and Iceland only managing a draw, it means Croatia have a crucial two point advantage over Argentina with the two set to face each other on Thursday.
And Mandzukic is very confident Croatia can achieve something at this World Cup.
“Of course I want to do something with Croatia team,” Mandzukic told FIFA after the match.
“We are all very motivated. For me the motivation is even bigger, because I want to do something great in Russia. I have won quite a lot trophies with my clubs in the past and I want a good result with Croatia.
“The first goal is to reach the knockout stage, I think we are capable of it, that we have a good team. There is a lot of talk about France 98. We’ll see if we can do something like that.”
Croatia take on Argentina next in what will be a crucial match between the top two sides in the group and Mandzukic’s men are available at 3/1 on William Hill to make it two wins from two.
