Brooklyn Nets landed a 119-116 win at the Toronto Raptors and once again it was Kyrie Irving who was the game’s big talking point. Irving scored a game-winning three-pointer on the buzzer and condemned the Raptors to their fourth straight defeat. It was the first time that Irving had landed a game-winning buzzer beater and it might have deflected attention away from his negative exploits away from the basketball court.
The result puts the Nets back in the mix having now won their last five games in a row, and Irving scored an impressive 32 points. Much of this victory has been put down to the tactics of head coach, Jacque Vaughn, who made the surprise call to opt for Irving over Kevin Durant who had originally been picked for the play.
The win over the Raptors follows on another impressive performance from Irving and the Nets where the wayward player managed to score 33 points in the team’s triumph over Charlotte Hornets. As such, many of the best sports betting sites are now shortening their odds for the Nets to go the distance in the Eastern Conference.
However, the Nets still have some way to go before they can hope to catch up with the Milwaukee Bucks who are far and away at the top of the conference with a 21-8 record. The Bucks earned a tough 128-111 win over Golden State Warriors with Giannis Antetokounmpo scoring 30 points.
Elsewhere, Boston Celtics appear to be slipping from the good form shown earlier in the season. This was seen when they lost their league-leading position against the Warriors the previous Tuesday and narrowly lost 95-92 against Orlando Magic yesterday. Cleveland Cavaliers are narrowly edging ahead thanks to a thrilling 100-99 win over the Dallas Mavericks that puts them ahead of the 19-12 record of the Nets.
Irving is no stranger to appearing in the latest sports news for all of the wrong reasons, but his current controversy shocked the basketball world. The Nets guard took to social media to promote a documentary that features anti-Semitic content and the ramifications went far and wide.
First of all, the 30-year old found himself having to serve an eight-game suspension from playing in the NBA. Then Nike suspended its contract with Irving and the sportswear titan even went on from this to strike their sponsorship deal with the Nets. Irving had previously partnered up with Nike for the previous eight years and had an $11 million contract with the brand.
While Irving has since apologized for the social media post, it seems that he has yet to be forgiven. This is despite meeting with the NBA commissioner and Jewish community leaders in a bid to resolve the issue. Thankfully, it looks like Irving is learning from his mistakes, and if anything, his performance against the Raptors suggests that the Nets guard could soon be back to his best.
