Betting.net’s Guide to the 2022 Formula 1 French Grand Prix

Ferrari is confident they have regained momentum against Red Bull this year as we accelerate into the 2022 French Grand Prix, a race where I believe Mercedes could be back in contention due to the long straights that are featured on the Circuit Paul Ricard, located in south France. It’s possible that we will see some intense temperatures because of the continuing heatwaves found within the European continent which will certainly put Pirelli’s tyres to the test.

The Current Title Contenders

Red Bull and Ferrari, along with their stars drivers Charles Leclerc & Max Verstappen have been the title protagonists this year. Verstappen holds a strong points lead of 38 points whilst Leclerc has won last time out in Austria to put a seven winless race drought to an end and should now be ready to reenergize his title quest. Charles and his team found Austria encouraging due to their improved speed and race pace whilst Red Bull seems to have lost their straight-line speed and Ferrari has maintained their edge in corners, but I think Ferrari may have caught up to Red Bull. Mattia Binotto, Ferrari’s boss, said that the team was slower than Red Bull in straight-line speed, especially in the DRS zones. The Ferrari boss stated that they had put a lot into the the car, with a new rear-wing being introduced to one car (for Leclerc in Canada), but it has been installed on all cars since then. The new rear wing contributed to reducing the gap between the two teams. “They still have a slight advantage, but it’s not significant” Binotto said.

Leclerc defeated Verstappen in Austria by a large margin. This was the first time this season that the Dutchman had been beaten on race day thanks to the Ferrari being more gentle with its tyres. Binotto said that Red Bull and Ferrari are very close in the power-restricted corners and that it is all about the grip, where the Scuderia could make all the difference. Mercedes could be joining the Fight This Weekend

It is possible that there will be a three-way fight at the front and this weekend which would include more than two teams, as Mercedes is expected be competitive again. It is unfortunate that Mercedes has struggled this season with race pace and seemingly never-ending bouncing problems for the silver arrows. However, they have had their best weekends at smooth circuits such as Paul Ricard. Mercedes was in contention for a British GP win at Silverstone due to the track layout and other improvements they brought along with them. The eight time world champions seem to have had a difficult time in Austria yet they managed to score some significant points on Sunday – and it’s obvious that they have always been fast at French GP. Despite their current deficit, a title challenge may seem far-fetched for the team. However, Mercedes might be in contention to get their first win of the season. French Support for Alpine

Alpine was strong in Austria, with the French team achieving double points and that further levelled them with their midfield rivals McLaren. As the fight for fourth place in the constructors championship continues, Alpine is looking in good shape though McLaren still holds the lead, thanks to Lando Norris’ podium in Imola. McLaren may still lead but the momentum is with the French team and they’ll be trying to beat McLaren at their home race to take fourth. Fernando Alonso finished tenth from the back of the grid, while Esteban Ocon finished fifth at the Austrian GP. Alonso was the one to ensure that Alpine earned more points at Silverstone then McLaren, beating Norris to fifth. Silverstone has many similarities to Paul Ricard’s track, and the French crowds at Le Castellet will surely support Ocon and Alonso, giving both drivers and Alpine a good reason to be positive heading into their home race. Support for Home Driver, Gasly & Alpha Tauri Woes

Pierre Gasly is another French driver who needs some supporting help on home soil as he hasn’t had a great season thus far. Red Bull’s sister team has been having problems with their car and other technicalities with Pierre’s best result this year being a fifth place finish at the Azerbaijan GP. This was probably due to the Red Bull powertrain that propels their cars along the long straights. The Paul Ricard circuit has some long straights that will help Alpha Tauri, who suffered five DNFs and only a few point finishes so far this season, get some results in the second part of the season.
