Responsible Gambling Messaging Mandatory At Missouri Sportsbooks

Missouri became the latest state to launch legal and regulated online sports betting on Monday, December 1. In doing so, the Show-Me State is also showing other states how it’s done when it comes to taking responsible gambling measures seriously.
As a requirement of the November 2024 referendum that legalized sports betting in the state, the Missouri Gaming Commission (MGC) is tasked with creating the regulatory framework to not only help establish an effective responsible gambling program, but also to continue to provide easy access to assistance for problem gamblers in the state.
The ballot measure that gave the go-ahead to legal and regulated sports betting in the state also included a provision for the creation of the Compulsive Gaming Prevention Fund (CGPF). Money for the establishment of this fund will come from the 10% tax grab that the state will be getting from sports betting revenue. A minimum of $5 million will be earmarked annually to go directly into the CGPF.
The funds will be utilized to establish and maintain measures such as providing counseling and support services to those suffering from problem gambling issues. Money will also be used to develop specific treatment and prevention programs for those in need of problem gambling assistance. Grants will be issued to organizations whose sole purpose is to offer help to compulsive gamblers. Money will also be provided to fund research that will further the cause of more easily detecting patterns of compulsive gaming.
Many responsible gambling measures are mandatory in Missouri
It isn’t just about putting money aside to help with responsible gambling in Missouri. The state is also requiring that each sports betting site is also being proactive in its approach to the matter.
All Missouri sports betting apps must include links on their sites to responsible gambling resources. There must be links to the state’s exclusion list. The MGC has created an exclusion list for bettors, upon which names of problem gamblers can be placed either voluntarily or involuntarily.
Self-exclusion can run anywhere from 72 hours to up to a year. Account holders will still be able to access their sports betting accounts to make withdrawals. However, they will be prevented from placing any bets or accessing any betting site. Sportsbooks will be forbidden from sending the excluded player any type of marketing or promotional offers during their time of exclusion.
Sports betting regulations in Missouri include a requirement enabling bettors to place specific daily, weekly, and monthly limits on how often they can access a sports betting site.
Toll-free numbers to local (1-888-BETSOFF) and national (1-800-GAMBLER) organizations that assist problem gamblers will also be made available through all of the state’s betting sites. These helplines are accessible 24/7 every day.
A link to the Missouri Department of Mental Health is another resource that will be made accessible. This department administers programs and works with certified private mental health counselors and clinics that can help those with a gambling addiction.
