When it comes to the legalization of sports betting in Georgia, one committee’s suggestion did not lead to another committee’s recommendation.
Just last week, the Senate Study Committee on Making Georgia the No. 1 State for Tourism recommended that the state legalize mobile sports betting.

This week, Georgia’s House Committee on Gaming in the State presented its findings to the state government. The committee did not recommend that Georgia pursue the legalization of sports betting.
The committee was founded during the 2025 session when the Georgia House of Representatives passed HR 753. This bill created the House Study Committee on Gaming in the State of Georgia to assess the pros and cons of expanding gaming within the state.
In particular, the committee was tasked with reviewing how gambling would contribute to Georgia in terms of economic development and the quality of jobs that legalization would create, while also weighing its impact against social and societal ills.
Another area of assessment was whether the legalization of gambling would increase tax revenues and aid the budget. Another area of study was whether Georgians are currently traveling out of state to gamble.
The committee heard 12 hours of in-person testimony and was further informed through a total of 36 presentations from 35 presenters throughout committee meetings before rendering a verdict on their findings.
The committee was not charged with the task of publishing any recommendations on what next steps should be taken in any potential legalization of sports betting in the state. Ultimately, they chose not to make any recommendations.
It probably didn’t help that Rep. Marcus Wiedower, the chairman of the committee, tendered his resignation in the midst of the study.
During his time in the state legislature, Wiedower put forth a pair of bills that were designed to move the legalization of sports betting forward.
One bill offered an outline of how tax rates and licensing limits would be set. It included a recommendation that the Georgia Lottery be established as the state regulator to oversee legal and regulated sports betting.
Wiedower’s second bill called for a statewide referendum on the legalization of sports betting to be held as part of the November 2026 midterm elections.
So where does Georgia go from here? Well, even though the committee offered no recommendations, the hearings held did supply state lawmakers with data and information that can be discussed as part of any debate over the potential legalization of sports betting in the state.
Still, at this late stage of the year, it’s unlikely that any new bill pursuing the legalization of sports betting in Georgia could be introduced in time to be debated during the 2026 state legislature session.
To legalize sports betting in Georgia, two steps are mandatory. Firstly, a constitutional amendment must be passed by a two-thirds majority vote in both the Georgia House of Representatives and the State Senate.
That would need to be followed by approval from a statewide referendum held during a general election.
