Brief Introduction to the USFL

If the USFL sounds familiar to you, that makes sense since there was an original version of this same league in existence from 1983-1985. It took place in the Spring and allowed fans to get more high quality football once the NFL season ended.

So What is the USFL?

Fox Sports is the owner of the United States Football League (USFL), a professional, outdoor football league that is similar to the NFL. It will play a 10-week season beginning in April 2022. Daryl “Moose” Johnston will be the Executive Vice President for Football Operations.

USFL Teams

There are eight USFL teams. They will be divided into either the North Division or the South Division. However, they will all play in Birmingham, Alabama.

Each of these eight teams changed their team names to reflect the colors of the 1980s USFL. Since the original trademarks had been abandoned after the league purchased them, this was allowed. These teams include theNew Jersey Generals, Birmingham Stallions, Houston Gamblers, Michigan Panthers, Philadelphia Stars, New Orleans Breakers, Tampa Bay Bandits, and Pittsburgh Maulers.

USFL 2022 Players

Each USFL team can keep a 38-man roster and seven-man practice squad active.

These players were selected through a draft, which took place over two days on February 22 and 23. Each round was dedicated to a position in order to better divide the talent pool between the eight teams.

According to reports, any player who graduated high school in 2020 or later will be allowed to join the USFL. The theory is that players can leave college after two years to join the USFL.

USFL Head Coaches

The USFL is a development league for players, staff, and head coaches. This is a chance for some of these men to demonstrate their leadership abilities and game planning skills to NFL owners.

A number of well-known names are among the eight new USFL head coach candidates vying for the title in 2022. These include NFL legends Jeff Fisher, Todd Haley, and college-level coaches like Skip Holtz and Larry Fedora.

USFL Schedule

The USFL’s regular season will last ten weeks. Throughout the season, there will be two Saturday and two Sunday games.

On Saturday, June 25, the top two teams from each division will meet for the first round of playoffs. These two matches-ups will determine the USFL title game contenders, and that game will be held on July 3, 2022.

USFL 2022 Salary

The USFL’s players and coaches will receive fair compensation for their efforts, but it is still far less than the multi-million-dollar NFL contracts.

The Active Roster players will receive $45,000 for a 10-game season, or $4,500/game. While the Practice Squad players will receive $15,000 per 10-game year or $1,500/game.

Players will also be eligible for an $850 bonus for every win, and a $10,000 prize for champion teams.

Strayer University and Strategic Education’s Capella University have partnered to allow USFL players and their staff to receive a tuition-free, un-debted college education.

USFL Lawsuit

You can’t create a new league under an old name without legal drama. The original USFL is currently suing for the new version of USFL. There are many reasons for this, including:
