A foul in soccer/football is when a player wins a free kick or penalty after being impeded by an opposing player. Total fouls won refers to the total amount in a match – either by an individual player or, more likely, by an entire team. Most of our major online bookmakers allow bettors to select total fouls won in many sports but it is more common to find the market offered in football betting. The bet is predicting how many fouls a team can win during an entire match. A benchmark number will usually be introduced and either the odds offered on more than number – or maybe as an over/under choice.
Traditionalists may not like the term ‘to win a foul’ but it is really only the opposite bet to the total fouls committed selection. One thing to note with the total fouls won bet is that free-kicks or penalties awarded for handball or simulation are not generally included as part of the total.
These kinds of bets can be selected before a match starts or used as an in-play bet as long as the bookmaker offers the market.
To go some way to explaining how to view this market, Brazilian football star Neymar was fouled more times in their opening World Cup 2018 match against Switzerland than any other player in the last 20 years of World Cup matches. The player sometimes doesn’t get much sympathy from fans but he was fouled 10 times out of the total of 30 in the match. This was the most since England’s Alan Shearer was fouled 11 times by Tunisia in 1998.
