An MVP is the most valuable player in a particular sport season or individual match. The term is more common in the US and Canada but is used widely across the world now. The MVP is essentially the same as a man of the match and the winner is usually awarded a trophy after a big sporting occasion.
It is not as common for sports such as football or cricket to have a MVP award. However, each format of cricket will have a player of the series or match awarded at the conclusion of the series or match, and football matches see a man or player of the match awarded, often by club sponsors, after full time. International tournaments such as the World Cup may have a player of the tournament award, often under a different name such as the Golden Ball award at the football World Cup.
Although some bookmakers may offer a betting market for MVPs in these sports it is more common – and traditional – for American sports to award this prize.
One of the most popular MVP betting markets relates to American football’s Super Bowl. Quarterbacks have traditionally been the recipients of the MVP award as in American football they are the ones that have the biggest say in how the game is played.
All the major sports in the US have MVP awards for their championship games as well as their regular seasons however. Bookmakers will offer prices on both the season and finals version of the award.
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has won four Super Bowl MVP awards – the most in the game’s history – his most recent coming in 2017. As the offense score the most points in American football it is only natural that they win most of the awards but there have been four defensive MVPs in the last 20 years: linebackers Ray Lewis, Malcolm Smith and Von Miller and safety Dexter Jackson.
