Century betting is a form of sports betting which is limited to the game of snooker. A century in snooker describes a player managing to score a hundred points in one visit to the table, and is also known as a century break. In the Snooker World Championship held at the Crucible Theatre in 2018, there were 84 centuries scored, although since 1977, this figure has been as low as 6 and as high as 86, numbers which reflect the increasing size of the championships and the growing professionalism of the players taking part.
There are several different ways in which bettors can place bets on snooker centuries, covering both the match in general and the individual players. The simplest form of such a bet is to bet on the number of centuries to be scored during a match, while player century betting concentrates on the number of centuries which an individual named player will score. Many bookmakers also offer these bets as player match century and total match century bets. In both cases the bookmaker will set a figure and the bettor will have to bet whether the number of centuries scored will be above or below that figure.
Successful century betting involves a close study of the form and tactical approach of the player involved. Players who attack are more likely to score centuries than those who defend and build via smaller breaks, and an in form player is more likely to have the confidence to play for high scores from the start of a tournament, while a less confident player might only start hitting centuries in the later stages.
