The destination of the Premier League title may have been settled in early April but the honour of being the division’s top scorer remains up for grabs, a straight shootout between Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.
Kane is the incumbent, the two-time and reigning Premier League Golden Boot winner and no player since Alan Shearer in 1994-95, 1995-96 and 1996-97 has finished top of the charts three seasons in a row. Kane plundered 25 league goals in 2015-16 and 29 in 2016-17, and is on course to break at least the former tally in 2017-18.
But it might not be enough for the hat-trick Golden Boot, thanks to the astonishing form of Salah. The Egyptian forward was a big-money buy from Roma last summer but no one could have expected the size of the return on the Reds’ investment – matching the record for goals in a 38-game season in the 35th fixture of the campaign is just the tip of the iceberg.
The numbers don’t lie: Kane and Salah are the two premium attackers in the Premier League this season, and one of them will claim the Golden Boot in recognition of their goalscoring feats. Salah has the advantage, but Kane has been there before – and the England man often scores in clusters, and takes his team’s penalties too.
Manchester City may be out in front at the top of the table but it’s all to play for between Kane and Salah, the Premier League’s deadliest duo.
