Manchester City have, as expected, already closed out the Premier League title but there are lots of betting options still available for the remainder of 2017/18. One of the more popular season-long punts involves the winner of the Golden Boot award as the division’s top scorer and while one man has a clear lead at the head of the list, the battle is far from over.
We’ll take a look at the current Premier League Golden Boot odds and suggest some of the best betting sites for this particular market.
Who’s out in Front?
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah tops the current premier league top scorers chart and after finding the net against Bournemouth at the weekend, the Egyptian international now has 30 league goals in his first season at Anfield.
Salah’s record at former club Roma was an impressive one but few would have expected the player to be such a revelation at Liverpool, particularly when a previous spell in the Premier League with Chelsea ended in disappointment and a move to Italy after just two goals in 13 league appearances across two seasons at Stamford Bridge.
The current Premier League Golden Boot odds markets show the Liverpool man as a clear and obvious favourite with Bet365 and Sun Bets, who have the current top price of 1/8, among the best betting sites for those backing Mohamed Salah.
Currently the Title Holder
Tottenham’s Harry Kane is the holder of the trophy and the England striker sits in second place in the list of current premier league top scorers. Heading into the club’s game at Brighton, Kane has 25 goals, a total that was adjusted in controversial fashion after an appeal gave him Spurs’ second goal against Stoke, a strike that was originally credited to team mate Christian Eriksen.
The 24 year old won this prestigious individual trophy in 2015/16 and 2016/17 and for anyone prepared to rule out his chances of making it a hat trick, it’s worth remembering his prolific finish to the previous campaign. Kane, after injury lay offs, found himself lagging behind the Golden Boot leader Romelu Lukaku who was with Everton at the time before scoring seven goals in just two games against Leicester City and Hull City.
The Spurs man overtook the Belgian to claim his second premier league golden boot award in as many years and for those backing Kane for the hat trick, William Hill and BetVictor are the best betting sites here with their 8/1 top price.
Will it be a Two Man Race?
The battle for the Premier League Golden Boot looks to be a straight fight between Mo Salah and Harry Kane but with five games left to play, there may just be hope for Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero. The Argentinian centre forward has a tally of 21 goals from 25 games so far in this campaign and he was the last person to win this trophy prior to Kane’s double.
Aguero took the award at the end of the 2014/15 season and, if he stays fit, he will be targeting a prolific finish to the current campaign. The Manchester City man is a distant option in the premier league golden boot markets but while he is down at 40/1 with Bet365, BetFred and 188Bet are the best betting sites to use here with their excellent top industry price of 100/1.
And then the Also-Rans
Moving through the list of current premier league top scorers we now come to Aguero’s Manchester City team mate Raheem Sterling and Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy who both have 17 goals at this late stage of the campaign.
Those are respectable tallies, especially for Sterling who plays as a winger / attacking midfielder, but either man would have to score at least 14 goals in five games to overhaul Mo Salah and that seems unlikely. Further down the list are Roberto Firmino and Romelu Lukaku on 15 while Glenn Murray, Son Heung-Min and Eden Hazard are on twelve but we’re getting to the point where a win would seem impossible. That theory is backed up in the markets where Lukaku has the shortest odds amongst the also rans with 10Bet and Sport Pesa the best betting sites to use as their top price sits at 300/1.
Our Verdict: Salah To Claim the Golden Boot
Mohamed Salah is the obvious pick here for the premier league golden boot award and the Egyptian has that five goal lead over Harry Kane going into the closing stages of the season. However, at the time of writing, Spurs have five games still to play as opposed to Liverpool’s four and when we remember Kane’s explosive finish to the 2016/17 campaign, it’s worth looking at the run in for both teams concerned.
Tottenham have those five games and based on their results over the course of the season, they could expect to win all of them. Three of those games are at home, against Watford, Newcastle United and Leicester City while Spurs will also travel to Brighton and bottom of the table West Brom.
As for Liverpool, they also make the trip to West Bromwich and the Reds are at home to Brighton and Stoke. The teams in the bottom half should hold no fears but among those games is a tricky trip to Chelsea who will be desperate for points in order to stay in touch with the Champions League places.
We aren’t completely ruling out Sergio Aguero, who lies in third place in the list of current premier league top scorers but fitness is a key element to lifting the trophy. Aguero is already nine goals behind Salah at the top and following some recent injury issues we wouldn’t be surprised if the Argentinian is rested now that Manchester City have won the title.
Taking all aspects into account, Harry Kane would need to go on the type of scoring spree that saw him snatch the award from Romelu Lukaku twelve months ago. He is capable of doing just that and the fixture list looks kind for him but it’s been an exceptional season for Mohamed Salah who, unlike Lukaku in 2016/17, should keep on scoring in the closing stages and claim the Golden Boot in his full campaign in English football.
