What is a Triple Bogie?
A triple bogie is the name given to a golf score when the player in question scores three more than the par for the hole. Golf scoring works by each hole on the course having a par. This is the number of strokes which it is expected to take a player to get the ball in the hole. Most holes are par 3, 4, or 5. If a player scores 1 over par on a hole it is called a bogie, 2 over par is a double bogie and 3 over par is a triple bogie. For reference, 1 under par is called a birdie, 2 under par an eagle and 3 under par an albatross.
How is a Triple Bogie used in Sports Betting?
Betting on any aspect of a golf tournament before it begins can be tricky, as even the major championships tend to be fairly wide open, with pre match favourites suffering one disastrous round and dropping out of contention. In play betting enables bettors to follow the action as it unfolds and place a variety of bets, from outright winner to specific statistics such as how many triple bogies will be scored in a round. At the beginning of a round, factors such as the perceived difficulty of the course and the form of players coming into the championship will govern any bet on how many triple bogies will be scored, either by a specific player or in the tournament as a whole. Bookmakers will generally offer a range of options, with the bettor placing their stake on the one they think is most likely or a spread of numbers, with bettors choosing above or below the number of bogies given.
As play progresses, however, attentive bettors may notice that a particular player is having a hard time, and is therefore more likely to score a triple bogie on the next hole, or before the end of the round. Keeping an eye on the weather forecast can be useful as well, since if you know that bad weather is heading toward the golf course, you know that the chances of triple bogies being scored get higher. Bettors who move fast enough may be able to beat any shift in odds which bookmakers bring about to reflect a change in conditions.
