A treble is a single bet that combines three separate selections. All three must win for you to collect a payout. If even one selection loses, the entire bet loses.
You'll come across this term mostly on sportsbooks that use UK or Commonwealth betting language, though it means exactly the same thing as a three-leg parlay. This page walks you through what a treble looks like, how the math works, and what to watch out for before you place one.
What does treble mean?
When you place a treble, you pick three separate events - say, three different soccer matches - and combine them into one bet. Your stake (the amount you risk) is tied to all three at once. The sportsbook multiplies the odds of each selection together, which is what makes the potential payout much larger than betting each game individually. But that multiplication works against you too: three separate chances for something to go wrong.
In the US, the same structure is usually called a
parlay
or, more specifically, a three-leg parlay. You may also see it labelled a "three-fold" on some betting sites. The underlying mechanics are identical regardless of what it's called. The term "treble" appears more often on sites built for international markets, but any US sportsbook that offers parlay betting supports the same concept.
Real-life example
Suppose it's an NFL Sunday and you want to back three teams to win their games outright. Here are the moneyline odds the sportsbook is offering:
Kansas City Chiefs: -120 (decimal: 1.83)
Philadelphia Eagles: +110 (decimal: 2.10)
San Francisco 49ers: -105 (decimal: 1.95)
To work out your combined parlay odds, you multiply the decimal odds together:
1.83 x 2.10 x 1.95 = 7.49
You stake $20 on this treble. If all three teams win, your total payout is $20 x 7.49 = $149.80. That includes your $20 stake back, so your profit is $129.80.
If the Chiefs win, the Eagles win, but the 49ers lose, you receive nothing. The whole bet is gone. That is the core risk of a treble - three legs must all land, or the stake is lost entirely.
How treble is used
Bettors use trebles when they want to turn small stakes into larger potential payouts. Betting $20 on each of those three teams individually at those odds would return much less combined profit than the $129.80 available through the treble - but that potential reward comes at the cost of needing all three to win. One bad result erases everything.
You'll typically build a treble in the parlay section of a sportsbook's bet slip. As you add selections, the combined odds update automatically. Most
betting apps
show you the projected payout in real time as you add each leg. One thing worth knowing: sportsbooks build their margin into each individual line, so the combined odds are slightly lower than a fair market would produce. The more legs you add, the more that margin compounds. Trebles are not inherently a bad bet, but you're fighting a small built-in edge on each of the three selections.
A
double bet
works the same way as a treble but uses only two selections instead of three - it's a useful starting point if you're new to combined bets. Stepping up in size, a
four-fold
is the same structure with four selections, and the chain continues from there. All of these sit under the broader category called an
accumulator
