A system bet is a type of combined wager where you pick multiple teams or outcomes, but you do not need all of them to win in order to get a payout. Instead, the sportsbook covers every possible combination of a set size within your selections, so a single loss does not automatically wipe out your entire bet.

You will see system bets in the "multiples" or "combo" section of most US sportsbooks. This page explains how they work, walks through a real soccer example with actual numbers, and covers when a system bet might make sense compared to a standard parlay.

What does system bet mean?

When you place a system bet, you choose a group of selections - say four teams - and then tell the sportsbook to cover all possible combinations of a smaller size, such as every possible two-team or three-team grouping within those four. Each of those smaller combinations is called a permutation. The sportsbook treats each permutation as a separate bet and charges you a stake for each one. If some of your selections win and others lose, the winning combinations still pay out, while the losing ones do not.

The most common system bet formats have names like "2-from-3," "3-from-4," or "2-from-4." The first number tells you the size of each combination; the second tells you how many total selections you made. A 2-from-3 system, for example, produces three separate two-selection bets - called doubles - and is also known as a full cover doubles system. You pay a stake for each combination, so your total outlay is higher than a single parlay, but you have a safety net against one bad result.

Real-life example

You decide to place a 3-from-4 system bet on four MLS matches on a Saturday afternoon. Your four selections and their American odds are: Team A to win (+120), Team B to win (-110), Team C to win (+130), and Team D to win (+100). A 3-from-4 system covers every possible three-selection combination, and there are exactly four of those: A-B-C, A-B-D, A-C-D, and B-C-D. You place $10 on each combination, so your total stake is $40.

At the end of the day, Teams A, B, and C all win, but Team D loses. Any combination that includes D loses with it, so the A-B-D, A-C-D, and B-C-D bets return nothing. However, the A-B-C combination wins. To work out the payout for that one, convert the American odds to decimal: +120 becomes 2.20, -110 becomes 1.91, and +130 becomes 2.30. Multiply them together: 2.20 x 1.91 x 2.30 = approximately 9.67. Multiply by your $10 stake: $96.70 returned on that winning combination.

You spent $40 in total and received $96.70 back, for a net profit of $56.70. In a standard four-team accumulator, Team D's loss would have lost you the entire $40. The system bet absorbed that loss and still left you in profit.

How system bet is used

System bets show up most often on soccer, NFL, and NHL markets, where bettors want coverage across several games on the same day. You will typically find them in the parlay or multiples section of a betting site - look for a dropdown or toggle that lets you switch from "accumulator" to "system" or "combination." Most sportsbooks will automatically calculate how many combinations your selections produce and show you the total stake before you confirm.

One thing to keep in mind is that a system bet costs more upfront than a single accumulator because you are funding multiple smaller bets at once. The trade-off is resilience: a system bet is designed to survive a losing selection. However, the bookmaker still builds a margin into the odds on every leg, so the house edge applies to each combination individually. A system bet reduces the risk of a total wipeout, but it does not remove the long-term edge the sportsbook holds.
