The starting line-up is the line-up of players at the start of a team game, and in terms of sports betting the team game in question is generally football.  The line-up has to be handed over to the officiating body – such as FIFA, UEAFA or the EPL – a specified period of time before the match in question kicks off, and can have an impact on bets placed on that match, or can be bet on in its’ own right.

How is the Starting Line Up Used in Sports Betting?

Once the starting line-up has been announced it can have a huge impact on a wide variety of bets. In the simplest terms, bets on individual players scoring or being man of the match will become much less likely to pay out if the player in question isn’t actually named in the starting line-up. Similarly, the strength of a starting line-up and whether key players are being rested or are injured or suspended could have a huge impact on the final result. The fact that missing players might weaken a team may seem obvious, but the introduction of other players with a more defensive mind-set may make betting on a draw or low scoring match a more tempting option. For that reason, it’s prudent not to place bets until the starting line-up has been announced, although in the case of some bets, such as an accumulator spread across a day or weekend, this won’t be possible.

The other bet which can be placed on a starting line-up involves betting on whether individual players will be named in it. As with many bets, getting this right is a question of researching the circumstances. Knowing which players are injured, whether other, more important games are coming up, and how impressive fringe players have been when making substitute appearances or playing for the reserves, will all play a part in successfully predicting when a particular player will be named in the starting line-up.
