A split line Asian handicap bet is when a punter is betting on an event using the Asian handicap system - giving one team a head start in the way of goals, or issuing a handicap for them to overcome.
The split Asian handicap bet adds another factor into the bet using two handicap totals. The stake is split between the two, creating two separate bets on one event and can be found with most online bookmakers.
How is Split Line Asian Handicap used in Sports Betting?
Originally popular in Asia (hence the name), handicap betting is a form of spread betting which eliminates the possibility of a draw in a soccer match. To compensate for this lack of option the favored side are given a handicap to overcome – effectively starting from -.5 or -1 goal for example – and the underdog starts the match with the same amount of goals as a head start.
Split line Asian handicap betting takes this form one step further and splits the bet into two. For example if Liverpool had split handicap odds of 1.77 for 0.0, +0.5, a £10 bet would be split £5 on Liverpool at 0.0 and £5 at +0.5.
If the match ended as a score draw then the first £5 would be refunded and the second part of the bet would bring in £13.85 in returns (5 + 5 x 1.77). A Liverpool win would win £17.70 as both parts of the bet would win (5 x 1.77 + 5 x 1.77).

Asian handicap betting originated in Indonesia but has become increasingly popular worldwide since the beginning of the 21st century. Journalist Joe Suamarez Smith apparently coined the term ‘Asian handicap betting’ in 1998 when he was asked by an Indonesian bookmaker for a translation of the betting method used there.
