A single bet is the simplest wager you can place: you pick one outcome, put money on it, and either win or lose based on that one result alone. No other selections are involved. If you are completely new to sports betting, a single bet is almost certainly the first type of bet you will ever place.
You will see the option to place a single bet on every US sportsbook, across every sport and every market. This page explains what a single bet is, walks through a real NFL example with actual numbers, and shows how singles compare to more complex bet types.
What does single bet mean?
A single bet means you are wagering on one selection only. You choose an outcome - say, the Kansas City Chiefs to win a game - place a stake (the amount of money you are risking), and wait for the result. If your selection is correct, the sportsbook pays you back your stake plus your winnings, calculated from the odds. If your selection is wrong, you lose your stake. There are no other legs, no combinations, and no other results to worry about.

Real-life example
It is Sunday morning and you want to bet on the San Francisco 49ers to beat the Dallas Cowboys in an NFL game. You open a sportsbook and see the 49ers listed at -150 on the moneyline. The moneyline is simply the bet on which team wins the game outright. Odds of -150 mean this team is the favorite, and you need to stake $150 to win $100 in profit.
You decide to place a $30 single bet on the 49ers at -150. Here is how the math works:
Stake: $30. Odds: -150. To calculate the profit, divide your stake by 1.5 (because -150 means you risk $1.50 for every $1.00 of profit). $30 divided by 1.5 equals $20 profit. Total payout if the 49ers win: $30 stake returned plus $20 profit, which comes to $50.
If the 49ers lose, you lose your $30 stake and nothing else. Because this is a single bet, there is nothing else tied to it. The result of any other game that day has no effect on your bet.
When you'll see single bet
Most US sportsbooks use a bet slip system. When you tap on an odds price for one selection, that selection lands on your bet slip and the sportsbook automatically labels it as a "single." You enter your stake, the site shows your potential payout, and you confirm the bet. The word "single" may not always appear in large text, but any bet slip showing one selection with a straight stake-to-payout calculation is a single bet.
Singles are also the building block for every other bet type. When you start combining two or more selections onto one bet slip, the sportsbook will offer you the chance to turn them into a
parlay
or other multi-selection bet. Understanding the single bet first makes those combinations much easier to follow. It is also worth knowing that sportsbooks build a small margin into every set of odds - often called the juice or vig - so the odds you see are slightly worse than the true probability. This applies to singles just as it does to any other bet type.
Once you are comfortable with single bets, the next logical step is to explore multi-selection bets. A
double bet
combines two selections into one wager, and both must win for you to collect. A
treble
works the same way with three selections. Combining four or more selections is commonly called an
accumulator. These formats can increase potential returns, but each additional selection also increases the chance of losing the whole bet. Many experienced bettors still use single bets regularly because each selection stands or falls on its own merits.

Is a single bet the same as a straight bet?
Yes, these two terms mean the same thing. "Straight bet" is another common label for a single-selection wager. Some sportsbooks use one term, some use the other, but the structure is identical - one selection, one stake, one potential payout.
Why would I place a single bet instead of a parlay?
