What does "price" mean in sports betting? Price Explained in 2 minutes

In sports betting, the "price" is the odds attached to a bet. It tells you how much you stand to win relative to how much you wager. If you have ever looked at a betting slip and seen a number like -110 or +240 next to a team's name, you were looking at the price.
You will run into this word constantly as a bettor. Sportsbooks set a price for every outcome they offer. Understanding what that price means - and what it says about the bookmaker's edge - is one of the first things worth learning. This page walks through exactly what the price represents, with a real numbers example you can check yourself.
What does price mean?
The price of a bet is simply another word for odds. It tells you two things at once: how likely the sportsbook thinks an outcome is, and how much profit you would make if your bet wins. In American odds format, a negative number like -150 means you must wager $150 to win $100 in profit. A positive number like +130 means a $100 bet returns $130 in profit. The stake (the amount you put in) is always returned on top of your profit if you win.
The word "price" is used the same way a shopper might compare prices in a store - you are asking what it costs to get a return on that particular outcome. Experienced bettors will say a team is "a short price" when the odds are low, meaning the potential profit is small relative to the stake. They will say a team is "a big price" when the odds are long, meaning the potential profit is large but the outcome is considered unlikely by the sportsbook. Sportsbooks build a small margin into the prices they offer, so the price is almost always slightly worse than the true probability - that margin is sometimes called the juice or vig.
Real-life example
Say it is an NFL Sunday and you are looking at a game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos. The sportsbook you are using shows the Chiefs at -220 and the Broncos at +180. Those two numbers are the prices for each side on the moneyline (the moneyline is a bet on which team wins outright, with no point spread involved).
You decide to back the Broncos at +180 and put down a $50 stake. Here is how the math works: a +180 price means that for every $100 wagered, you win $100 in profit. Because you are betting $50 - half of $100 - your profit if the Broncos win is half of $180, which is $90. Your total payout (profit plus your original stake back) is $90 + $50 = $140.
Now consider the other side. If you had bet the Chiefs at -220, you would need to risk $220 to win $100 in profit. On a $50 stake, the math scales down: $50 divided by $220 multiplied by $100 gives you roughly $22.73 in profit. Your total payout would be about $72.73. The price is lower because the Chiefs are the heavy favourite - the sportsbook considers them much more likely to win, so it pays out less for backing them.
When you will see the price
The price appears on every bet type a sportsbook lists - moneylines, point spreads, totals (betting on whether the combined score goes over or under a set number), futures, and props. On a standard odds board, the price sits right next to the team name or outcome. When you select a bet and it lands on your betting slip, the price shown there is what locks in at the moment you place the wager, unless the sportsbook offers a feature that updates it in real time.
Prices shift constantly in response to how much money is being bet on each side, injury news, and other information the sportsbook receives. Bettors who pay attention to line movement - the way prices change over time - are tracking how the price on a given outcome is drifting up or down before a game starts. Shopping the price across more than one sportsbook is a habit many regular bettors develop, because even a small difference in price affects your payout over time. You can browse

Price is closely related to several other terms you will see often.
Odds
is the most direct synonym - the two words are interchangeable in most conversations. The juice (also called the vig) is the margin built into the price by the sportsbook, and it is why the combined implied probability of both sides of a bet adds up to more than 100 percent. Line movement refers to how the price changes from when it opens to when the game kicks off. If you want to explore enhanced prices on specific events, some sportsbooks run
enhanced odds
promotions that temporarily improve the price on selected bets.

FAQs
Is price the same as odds?
Yes, they mean exactly the same thing. In everyday betting conversation, bettors and sportsbooks use the two words interchangeably. You might hear "what price are the Lakers tonight?" and the answer would be something like "+160."
Why does the price matter to a beginner?
The price determines how much you can win from any bet. Even if you pick winners consistently, getting a poor price eats into your returns over time. Learning to read the price is the single most fundamental skill in sports betting.
What does it mean when someone says a team is a short price?
A short price means the odds are low, so your potential profit is small relative to what you wager. A team listed at -300 is a short price - they are a heavy favourite and the payout for backing them is relatively modest.
Can the price change after I place a bet?
Once your bet is confirmed by the sportsbook, the price is locked in at whatever it was at the moment you placed the wager. Changes in the odds after that point do not affect your bet.
Do all US sportsbooks offer the same price?
No, prices vary from one sportsbook to another. The differences can be small, but they add up. Checking more than one sportsbook before placing a bet - often called line shopping - is a straightforward way to make sure you are getting the best available price.
What is the difference between price and payout?
The price is the odds shown before you bet. The payout is the total amount you receive back if your bet wins - that includes both your profit and your original stake. The price is used to calculate the payout.
