A parlay is a single bet that links two or more selections together, and every selection must win for you to collect any winnings. Miss one, and the whole bet loses. That high-risk structure is also what makes the potential payout much larger than betting each selection separately.

You will see parlays offered at every US sportsbook, usually through a parlay builder or bet slip that lets you combine games with a few taps. This page walks you through exactly how a parlay works, with real numbers you can follow line by line.

What does parlay mean?

A parlay is a multi-leg bet. Each "leg" is one individual selection - for example, picking the Kansas City Chiefs to win on Sunday. When you parlay two or more legs, your stake (the amount you risk) rides across all of them as a combined bet. The sportsbook multiplies the odds of each leg together, which is why the potential return climbs quickly as you add more legs. A two-leg parlay is sometimes called a double. Three legs is a treble. Four legs and above are referred to as a multiple or, in international betting, an accumulator.

One popular US variant is the same-game parlay (SGP). Instead of combining selections from different games, an SGP lets you stack multiple picks from a single game - for example, a team to win, a quarterback to throw for over 250 yards, and a wide receiver to score a touchdown, all in one NFL game. The correlations between outcomes in the same game mean sportsbooks adjust the odds accordingly, but SGPs have become one of the most used bet types in the US market. It is worth knowing that parlays, including SGPs, carry a higher house edge than single bets, so the sportsbook's built-in advantage is larger on these bets.

Real-life example

Say it is an NFL Sunday and you want to parlay three games. You pick the San Francisco 49ers (-110), the Buffalo Bills (-110), and the Philadelphia Eagles (-110). Each of those is a standard point-spread bet - you are wagering that each team covers the spread. Odds of -110 mean you risk $110 to profit $100, or in decimal form, 1.909.

To find your combined parlay odds, you multiply the decimal odds together: 1.909 x 1.909 x 1.909 = roughly 6.96 in decimal. Convert that back: a $100 stake multiplied by 6.96 gives a total payout of $696, meaning a profit of $596 on a $100 bet. That is significantly more than the $273 profit you would collect betting $100 on each game separately and winning all three.

The catch is straightforward. If even one of those three teams fails to cover the spread, the entire parlay loses and you get nothing back. All three legs must land. That is the trade-off every parlay bettor faces: a larger potential payout in exchange for a much harder bet to win.

When you'll see parlay

Most US sportsbooks display a parlay builder directly on the odds board. As you tap selections across different games, the bet slip automatically combines them and shows the running combined odds and projected payout. You can usually parlay odds from point spreads, moneylines (picking a team to win outright), and totals (betting whether a game's combined score goes over or under a set number) all in the same ticket. Futures bets - wagering on outcomes like a team winning a championship - can sometimes be added to parlays too, though not all sportsbooks allow it.

You will also see parlay-specific promotions at many sportsbooks, such as a small payout boost for winning parlays of three legs or more. These promos are worth reading carefully. They often come with restrictions on which markets qualify, and they do not change the underlying math enough to overcome the sportsbook's edge on multi-leg bets.

FAQs

Is a parlay the same as an accumulator?

Yes, they are the same type of bet. In the US the term parlay is standard, while accumulator or acca is used more commonly in the UK and internationally. Both require all selections to win, and both multiply the odds of each leg together to calculate the payout.

How many legs can I add to a parlay?

Most US sportsbooks allow anywhere from 2 to 12 or more legs on a single parlay. That said, the more legs you add, the harder the bet is to win. Each extra leg multiplies the odds but also multiplies the chance that something goes wrong. Most recreational bettors stick to two to four legs.

What happens if one leg of my parlay is cancelled or postponed?

If a game is cancelled or a leg is voided, most sportsbooks will remove that leg and settle the parlay on the remaining legs. So a three-leg parlay with one voided leg becomes a two-leg parlay. Check the house rules at the sportsbook you are betting with, as policies can vary slightly.
