What is Median Auction Maiden?
A median auction maiden is a flat race for horses who have not run a race, and is also related to the price at auction.
The thinking behind the race conditions is to create competitive races for horses whose stallion generated an average price when sold as a yearling. Horses that were sold at £20,000 more than the median price expressed in the conditions of the race are also excluded.
The eligible runners are linked to the price at which they were sold at auction as unraced horses.
How is Median Auction Maiden used in Sports Betting?
Median auction maidens fit into the overall structure for flat races involving inexperienced horses and those that have yet to win a race. A novice median auction has similar conditions but horses that have won up to two flat races can take part. Again, horses sold at public auction for £20,000 above the median price are not eligible. The purpose of these races is to provide an opportunity for horses whose stallion’s offspring did not go through auction at a relatively high price to win a race.
Only specified sales are valid and these are the main public sales in Europe and North America. The stallion median prices are published by Weatherbys in the Supplement to The Racing Calendar in February or March. This publication documents the weights to be carried by horses aged two and three in median auction races. The weights that apply for older horses are published in a separate supplement or are available at the relevant department at Weatherbys.
