Match play is a form of golf scoring which differs from the more common stroke play scoring system, but can still be bet on with the top bookmakers just the same. Stroke play involves each player playing a set number of holes, with the winning individual being the player who achieves the lowest score.

Match play, on the other hand, is a scoring system under which each hole is played as a match in itself, with the player who achieves the lowest score on the hole being awarded a point for it. Note that the par for the hole doesn’t play a part in this scoring system; as long as a player scores lower than the other players in their group, they win the hole. The Ryder Cup is probably the most famous and prestigious tournament to use match play scoring.

How is Match Play use in Sports Betting?

The same bets can be placed on match play golf tournaments, as on those which use stroke play for scoring, which means choosing the outright winner of a round or tournament. Match play betting also offers exciting in play betting options such as betting on which player is going to win the next hole, or whether it will be halved, which means two players sharing the point for the hole. Successfully betting on match play golf on a sports betting site involves doing the research to determine which players thrive under the pressures of this particular scoring system.

Golf Bookmakers also offer bets on how many points a particular player will win during a round of match play golf by, and a sensible bettor will wait to place their bet until they see how the groups playing the holes are made up.
