The highest scoring batsman is a cricket term for the player on either team who scores the most runs during either an innings or the match.

In Test cricket, each team will usually have two innings in which to score their runs, which means the batsmen on either side will get two goes at batting, whereas One Day cricket and Twenty20 matches are known as limited overs cricket and are just one innings a piece.

Runs by a batsman are accrued via singles, twos and occasionally threes, as well as and boundaries, which are shots that go for four or six, with the individual’s total added up. The batter with the highest number of runs becomes the highest scoring batsman of the match.

How is Highest Scoring Batsman used in Sports Betting?

Betting on the highest scoring batsman is a popular market and one that all bookmakers will offer prior to a match.

For example, in a Test match between England and Australia, you could back Joe Root to be the highest scoring batsman of the game. As Test matches comprise two innings, for the bet to be a winning bet, Root’s total score would be calculated over his two innings and if he had scored the highest number of runs the bet would be a winning one.

It is important to note that it is also possible to bet on just the highest scoring batsman for a team as opposed to the highest scoring in a combine. If that bet was placed, it would mean that just so long as Root scored the highest number of runs out of all the England players, then the bet would win.
