What is Form?
Form can relate to either an individual player or a team - or the recent performances of a horse - and shows how the person, team or horse has performed over a given period of time or against a particular opponent.
In football, the recent form of a team is often indicated over a team’s last five or six games and is an important aspect to consider in sports betting.
Every sport uses a form guide to predict how a player/team may perform with deeper insights gained by looking at a team or players form at either a certain venue, against a particular opponent or both.
In horse racing, punters use a form guide to predict the likelihood of a horse performing well at a certain track and is detailed in the racecard.
How is Form used in Sports Betting?
When making sports bets, recent form is one of the first statistics a punter will look at. This is because there will be tell-tale signs about the possible outcome of a match or race.
For example, if the form of a horse at Newmarket is that they have won four of their last six races at the circuit with back to back wins, it means that horse will most likely be in contention once again and may prove to be a smart bet.
The same can be said of many sports in which the recent form statistics favour one particular side.
Form also helps sportsbooks set the odds on an event in the first place before the punters’ money starts to dictate the way the odds start to move.
