An eagle is the name given to a golf score which is two under par for the hole. Since a score of one under par is called a birdie, it’s assumed that the name eagle was chosen as it represents an even larger bird. The majority of eagles are scored on par five holes, but they can be achieved on shorter par four holes or, of course, via a hole in one on a par 3 hole.
How is an Eagle Used in Sports Betting?
Betting on eagles during the course of a golf match can take several forms. A bet can be placed at the start of the tournament on the number of eagles which will be scored throughout, based on the course, predicted weather conditions and the strength of the field. The odds offered on such a bet will shift as the tournament progresses.
Eagle bets also offer an excellent example of the kind of in-play betting available during golf tournaments. Observing how a golfer plays the first six holes of a tournament – whether they are driving well, how their short game is holding up etc. - will make it possible to determine how likely it is that they can score an eagle on the par five seventh hole. In depth research will also pay dividends if it reveals the number of eagles generally scored on a certain course and/or individual holes when the conditions are just right. Betting on an eagle being scored represents less of an unskilled ‘guess’ than simply betting on a hole in one, but it is a form of fast paced, quick thinking gambling which will take a while to master and should be entered into on a gradual basis.
