What is a Draw?
The meaning of the term draw in sports is manifold. The most common definition is the result of a sporting contest in which neither side has won.
Not all sports can end with a draw, however. Tennis must have a match winner, for example, but in football and cricket a draw is a distinct possibility.
The second association in sports for the term draw refers to a draw of teams to meet one another in a set of fixtures.
Cup competitions, such as the World Cup, have their fixtures drawn before the competition commences as teams are paired in groups, and the group winners and runners-up meet as the competition progresses.
The FA Cup, for example, works differently as prior to each round a draw is conducted to pair teams against each other until the final.
Some competitions, particularly may also use a seeding system when drawing fixtures and match-ups. This method keeps the higher-seeded players or teams apart until later in the competition.
How is Draw used in Sports Betting?
The draw in football is one of the most common bets that bookmakers see placed. An example of placing this type of bet would be to back a Premier League game between Tottenham and Manchester United to finish 1-1.
As there is no outright winner, the points are shared, and the contest is officially declared a draw.
However, a common bet similar to this would be to place money on a Draw No Bet option. This essentially removes the draw element away from the bet and allows a punter to spread their bet on either a home or away win.
