In cricket betting, "caught" is a type of dismissal where a fielder catches the ball directly off the batsman's bat or glove before it touches the ground. If you are betting on how a wicket will fall, caught is the outcome you are wagering on when you think a batsman will hit the ball into the air and a fielder will complete the catch.

This type of bet shows up in a market called "method of dismissal" - either for a specific named batsman or for the next wicket to fall in a match. Because caught is the most common way batsmen get out in cricket, it is the first outcome a beginner will notice in these markets.

What does caught mean?

A caught dismissal happens when the batsman hits the ball and a fielder - including the wicket-keeper standing behind the stumps - catches it cleanly before it bounces. The ball does not need to travel far. A nick off the edge of the bat caught by the wicket-keeper counts exactly the same as a towering skier caught at long-on. The key rule is that the ball must not touch the ground first. When you place a "caught" bet, you win if the batsman is dismissed in any of these caught scenarios.

Sportsbooks typically offer a "method of dismissal" market with several possible outcomes: caught, bowled, lbw (leg before wicket), run out, stumped, and others. Each outcome has its own odds - the price that determines how much you can win relative to your stake (the amount you risk). Because caught is the most frequent dismissal type across all formats of cricket, it carries the shortest odds in this market. Shorter odds mean a lower potential payout, but a higher implied chance of winning.

Real-life example

Imagine a T20 match between two international sides. A named batsman is at the crease and you want to bet on how he will get out. You visit a sportsbook and find a method-of-dismissal market for that specific batsman. The odds listed look something like this:

• Caught: -140
• Bowled: +280
• LBW: +400
• Run out: +700
• Stumped: +900
• Any other dismissal: +500

You decide to bet $20 on caught at -140. Odds of -140 mean you need to risk $140 to profit $100, so a $20 stake returns a profit of $14.29. Your total payout if you win is $34.29 (your $20 stake back plus $14.29 profit). Later in the match the batsman drives hard at a wide ball, gets a thick outside edge, and the fielder at cover point pouches the catch. Your bet wins and you receive $34.29. Had the batsman been bowled instead, you would lose your $20 stake.

Notice that the -140 price reflects how often caught dismissals happen. The sportsbook has priced it as the most likely outcome, which is why the profit margin is smaller than on bowled or lbw.

When you'll see caught

The caught market appears most often in Test cricket and T20 betting, and sometimes in One Day International matches. You will find it listed under "player props" or "dismissal markets" on a cricket betting site. Some sportsbooks offer it as a standalone market for a named batsman, and others include it inside a broader "next wicket method" market where you are betting on how the very next wicket in the match will fall - without specifying which batsman.

Caught bets can be placed before the innings starts or, on sportsbooks that offer in-play betting, while the match is live. Live odds shift quickly based on the ball-by-ball situation - for example, if a batsman is playing aggressively and hitting the ball in the air repeatedly, the live price on caught may shorten further as the innings progresses.
