A board price is the set of odds displayed on a bookmaker's board at a racetrack, typically appearing around 15 minutes before a race begins. These odds replace the earlier prices that were available earlier in the day and reflect the market's best estimate of each runner's chances right before the gates open.
If you bet on horse racing or greyhound racing, you will come across this term regularly. Understanding what board prices are - and how they differ from other odds - helps you decide when to place your bet and at what price. This page explains what board prices mean, walks through a real example, and shows how they connect to other key racing terms.
What does board price mean?
In horse and greyhound racing, bookmakers post their odds in stages throughout the day. Early in the morning, you might see "morning line" or "ante-post" prices (odds set well in advance of the race). As the event gets closer, those odds are updated and eventually replaced by board prices. Board prices are the odds that appear on the bookmaker's display boards at the track in the final minutes before a race. They represent the live, current market just before betting closes.
Board prices matter because the starting price - often written as SP - is calculated from them. The starting price is the official odds recorded at the exact moment a race begins, and it is derived by averaging the board prices offered by on-track bookmakers at that point. If you ask for "SP" when placing a bet, you are agreeing to accept whatever the final board price settles at when the race starts, rather than locking in a specific price now. That can work in your favour or against you depending on how the market moves.
Real-life example
Suppose you are watching a six-furlong sprint at a US harness racing meet. A horse called Copper Lane is running in the fourth race. When you first look at the odds, around 30 minutes before the race, Copper Lane is listed at +400 (meaning a $100 bet returns $400 in profit, for a total payout of $500). Those are the early prices.
About 15 minutes before the race, the board prices go up. The on-track bookmakers have watched the betting patterns and adjusted. Copper Lane is now showing +300 on the boards - shorter odds than before, because more money has come in on the horse. You decide to place a $50 bet at the board price of +300.
Here is how the math works out if Copper Lane wins:
- Stake: $50
- Odds: +300
- Profit: $50 x 3 = $150
- Total payout: $150 + $50 stake = $200
If you had waited and taken SP instead, and Copper Lane attracted even more late money pushing the odds down to +250 by post time, your profit on the same $50 stake would have been only $125, with a total payout of $175. Locking in the board price of +300 when you spotted it saved you $25 in this scenario. Of course, the opposite can happen - if little money comes in late and the odds drift out, SP can end up being more generous than the board price you locked in.
When you'll see board price
Board prices are specific to horse racing and greyhound racing. You will hear the term used by track commentators, see it referenced in racing programs, and encounter it on
US sportsbooks
that cover thoroughbred, harness, and greyhound events. Online racing books typically mirror the on-track board prices in the lead-up to each race, updating their displayed odds as the market moves.
The main practical decision you face as a bettor is whether to take a fixed price before the race (which locks in the board price you see at that moment) or to take SP (which leaves your final odds open until the race starts). Fixed-price betting gives you certainty. SP betting means you accept the market's judgment at post time - useful if you think a horse's odds will drift out, but risky if you expect heavy late support to shorten the price.
Board price connects closely to a few other racing and betting terms worth knowing. The
starting price
(SP) is the most direct relation - it is the official version of the final board price and the figure used to settle SP bets. You will also encounter the concept of
odds
in every corner of sports betting, and understanding how odds express probability and payout is fundamental to reading any board correctly. When board prices shorten, it usually reflects money flowing into the market on a particular runner, compressing that runner's perceived chances.

FAQs
Is a board price the same as the starting price?
Not exactly. Board prices are the odds shown on bookmakers' boards in the final minutes before a race. The starting price is derived from those board prices - it is the average of the on-track board odds at the moment the race begins. They are closely related, but the starting price is the official settled figure used to pay out SP bets.
Why does the board price change so close to the race?
Board prices move because money keeps flowing into the market right up until the race starts. When a lot of bettors back the same runner, bookmakers shorten that runner's odds to reduce their risk. When a runner attracts little interest, odds can drift out. The board price is a live reflection of this supply and demand up to post time.
Should I take the board price or ask for SP?
It depends on what you expect to happen to the odds. If you think a horse will attract more money before the race and its price will shorten, locking in the current board price gives you better value. If you think the odds will drift out - meaning fewer people will back it - then waiting for SP could pay you more. Neither choice is always right, and the market is hard to predict.
