An accumulator, or "acca" for short, is a single bet that combines four or more individual selections, where every selection must win for your bet to pay out. Miss one, and the whole bet loses. In return for that added risk, the potential payout grows much larger than betting on each selection separately.
If you follow soccer, you have almost certainly seen someone mention a weekend acca. Sportsbooks display them prominently, and the big potential returns make them one of the most popular bet types around. This page breaks down exactly how an accumulator works, runs through the math on a real example, and explains what to watch out for before you place one.
What does accumulator (acca) mean?
An accumulator is a multi-selection bet where your winnings from the first selection are automatically rolled into the next, and so on through every leg. A "leg" is each individual game or event in the bet. Because each leg multiplies the running total, the odds compound quickly - a modest stake on four or five selections can produce a notably large payout if everything lands. The trade-off is straightforward: one wrong result wipes out the entire bet.
The term "accumulator" is rooted in British and European soccer betting, where it remains the standard word. In the US, the exact same structure is called a parlay. You will see "acca" used frequently on soccer-focused sportsbooks and in MLS betting markets, while "parlay" dominates NFL, NBA, and other US sport contexts. Both words describe the same mechanic. An acca with exactly three legs has its own name - a treble - while a four-leg version is sometimes called a four-fold.
Real-life example
Say it is a Saturday in MLS and you want to build a four-leg acca. You pick four matches, and a sportsbook gives you the following odds on each home team to win:
- Atlanta United to beat New York City FC: +110 (decimal 2.10)
- LA Galaxy to beat Seattle Sounders: -120 (decimal 1.83)
- Inter Miami to beat Orlando City: +100 (decimal 2.00)
- Portland Timbers to beat Colorado Rapids: +130 (decimal 2.30)
To work out the combined decimal odds, you multiply the four decimal figures together: 2.10 x 1.83 x 2.00 x 2.30 = 17.71. That is your combined odds multiplier. You place a $10 stake - the amount of money you put on the bet. Your total payout if all four selections win is $10 x 17.71 = $177.10, giving you a profit of $167.10 on a $10 bet.
Now consider what happens if Portland loses while the other three win. The acca loses in full. You do not get a partial return for the three correct picks. Your $10 is gone. That is the defining feature of an accumulator: it is all or nothing.
When you'll see accumulator (acca)
Sportsbooks that cover soccer prominently - including MLS, Premier League, and Champions League markets - tend to advertise acca promotions, such as "acca insurance" (a refund if exactly one leg loses) and odds boosts on pre-built accas. You will typically find acca builders in the soccer section of a sportsbook, where you can browse upcoming matches and add selections to a bet slip one by one. The sportsbook recalculates the combined odds automatically as you add each leg.
It is worth knowing that the bookmaker edge - the built-in margin that makes the sportsbook profitable over time - compounds across every leg you add. The more legs you include, the larger the sportsbook's edge grows relative to your expected return. Accas are genuinely entertaining and the payouts can be striking, but the probability of winning shrinks with each leg you add. Going in with a clear stake limit is a sensible habit.
Related terms
If you are exploring multi-selection bets, a few other terms are worth knowing. A treble is essentially a three-leg accumulator - the same structure, just one leg shorter. A system bet is a related but different idea: instead of requiring all legs to win, a system bet covers multiple combinations within your selections, so you can still return a profit even if one or two legs lose. For a broader look at where to place accas, soccer betting sites are the natural starting point since acca markets are deepest there.

FAQs
Is an accumulator the same as a parlay?
Yes, in practical terms they are identical. Both combine multiple selections into one bet where every leg must win. "Accumulator" or "acca" is the standard term in soccer and British-style betting markets, while "parlay" is the word most US sportsbooks use for NFL, NBA, and similar sports. If you understand one, you understand both.
How many legs does an accumulator need?
Most sportsbooks require at least four legs for a bet to be called an accumulator. Two selections together are called a double, three are a treble, and four or more become an accumulator or four-fold, five-fold, and so on. The exact minimum can vary slightly between sportsbooks, so it is worth checking the rules on the site you are using.
Do I get anything back if one leg of my acca loses?
Normally, no. A standard accumulator pays out only if every leg wins, and a single losing selection means the entire bet loses. Some sportsbooks offer "acca insurance" promotions that refund your stake as a free bet if exactly one leg lets you down, but that is a promotional offer rather than a standard rule. Always check whether a promotion applies before you place your bet.
