Five MLB Teams Sign Promotional Deals With Kalshi

The reigning World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers are among five MLB teams that have signed promotional deals with prediction market site Kalshi. Also entering into the promotional package with Kalshi are the Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres, and Atlanta Braves. Each of the Red Sox, Dodgers, and Braves began rolling out activations, including stadium signage and sponsored emails, ahead of the official announcements of the deal.
Kalshi is the largest legal, federally regulated prediction market app in the United States. However, the site is also embroiled in legal battles in several of the home states of these MLB teams over the legality of the sports-event contracts offered on the site.
Kalshi is forming MLB partnerships in states where its legality is being debated in the courts
Kalshi announced the partnership agreement with the five MLB teams on the company's Instagram account.
"We’re partnering with five of the most iconic teams in baseball: Dodgers, Braves, Giants, Red Sox, and Padres," the announcement read. "Baseball fans have made Kalshi part of how they engage with the game.
"We’re excited to keep investing in them and in the sport."
The Dodgers were also expressing delight with the new arrangement.
“The Dodgers are always looking for innovative ways to connect with our fans, and Kalshi represents an exciting new category,” Lorenzo Sciarrino, senior vice president of global partnerships for the Dodgers, said in a statement.
"We’re thrilled to begin this partnership and look forward to introducing new experiences that bring our fans even closer to the game.”
California is currently in legal battles with prediction market sites
While the Dodgers and Kalshi are aligning, state lawmakers in California are entering into battle with prediction market sites.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta joined a bipartisan coalition of 38 state attorneys general who are supporting state gaming enforcement against prediction markets. In addition, California Indian tribes have filed legal challenges arguing that these platforms bypass state sports betting restrictions and violate exclusive tribal gaming rights.
Kalshi is facing a court injunction in Massachusetts
Meanwhile, Kalshi is deadlocked in a legal fight with the state government in Massachusetts. At issue is whether the company is committing illegal sports betting by offering sports-event contracts to Massachusetts customers. Massachusetts operates legal and regulated sports betting.
In June, a judge granted permission for the Massachusetts Attorney General's office to expand its lawsuit against Kalshi. Suffolk County Superior Court Associate Justice Peter Krupp allowed Massachusetts Attorney General Joy Campbell's office to file a 71-page amended complaint in the state's lawsuit against prediction market site Kalshi.
The amendments build on a filing originally alleging that Kalshi engaged in sports wagering in violation of state laws.
In January, Campbell's office won a preliminary injunction. The ruling prohibited Kalshi from accepting online sports wagers and related events contracts from Massachusetts customers. This would be the case until the company complies with the state laws governing sports gaming. This would include securing a license to operate a sports betting site from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC).
