The NFL has announced that Washington, D.C., will play host to the league's 2027 Draft at a unique and historic location. The 2027 NFL Draft will take place across iconic locations throughout Washington, D.C., with the National Mall anchoring the Draft Theater in front of the Capitol.

Here's the thing about that location, which is of vital importance if you are planning to both attend and live bet the NFL Draft. You can't do that from there. Betting is illegal in federal enclaves. And 29% of locations in D.C. are considered to be federal enclaves. Those areas include the National Mall.

National Mall

The NFL Draft will dominate D.C.

The 2027 NFL Draft will be held from Thursday, April 29, to Saturday, May 1, 2027, in Washington, D.C. Hosted in partnership with the Washington Commanders and Events DC, the free three-day event will bring fans from around the world to the nation's capital.

The draft will take place across iconic locations throughout Washington, D.C.. The National Mall will be anchoring the Draft Theater in front of the Capitol and the NFL Draft Experience will be spanning Pennsylvania Avenue NW between 3rd and 7th Streets. Additional event elements will be situated throughout the footprint surrounding the National Mall.

"The NFL Draft continues to grow as one of our biggest and most accessible events, and we are excited to welcome fans and prospects to Washington, D.C., in 2027," Peter O'Reilly, NFL executive vice president of club business, international and global events, said in a statement. "Our nation's capital will provide an incredible, iconically American stage to host fans from around the world, as we celebrate the next generation of NFL stars."

The National Mall is a no-fly zone for gambling

If you go, don't expect that you'll be able to access the mobile app of your favorite online sports betting site to put an in-play wager down on the next pick in the draft. That's not gonna happen.

The National Mall is classified as an entertainment sports gambling restriction zone for the planning and management of Washington, D.C. by local government agencies. It's part of a two-block restriction zone emanating from the gambling entity’s physical location and going outward two blocks in all directions.

That area is part of federal land. All forms of real-time sports gambling are under strict prohibition by federal law. Not only is it illegal to place a bet in this area, it is also impossible. Geofencing of the National Mall assures that no betting site can offer access by any sort of device.

It's part of the District's gambling licensing procedure. This will supply notification to the user seeking a gambling license, whether they are within the two-block restriction zone. So while you're plotting your betting strategy, you will also need to plot your walking strategy. You'll need to be certain to be outside of the entertainment sports gambling restriction zone. Once you are, you can place your bet.

The NFL is the most popular sport to bet on in North America, and the NFL Draft is no different. Data is not readily available on draft-specific betting handle. However, estimates are that legal sportsbooks in the USA handle tens of millions of dollars in bets on the NFL Draft each year.

Popular NFL Draft betting markets range from predicting the exact first overall pick to highly specific prop bets. These can include the draft position of a player or a team's first player position drafted.
