Confessed Gambling Addict Entering NFL Supplemental Draft

Embattled quarterback Brendan Sorsby has announced his intention to apply for the NFL Supplemental Draft. Barely a week ago, it appeared that Sorsby would be at QB for the Texas Tech Red Raiders during the 2026 NCAA football season. His school won a temporary injunction returning his NCAA eligibility. Sorsby was declared ineligible after an NCAA investigation found that he'd made thousands of bets on games. It was even discovered that he'd bet on his own team.
As news broke that the Big 12 Conference was filing a countersuit, Sorsby opted to change course. He is now foregoing his final year of college eligibility.
Sorsby is still seeking NFL Supplemental Draft eligibility
Sorsby is an admitted gambling addict. That being the case, he is really rolling the dice on his future in football with this decision. His announcement that he would apply for the NFL Supplemental Draft was accompanied by news that he was dropping his lawsuit against the NCAA.
It was that lawsuit that opened the door to getting Sorsby back on the field with the Red Raiders. Last week, a Texas District Court Judge granted Sorsby a temporary injunction halting the NCAA sanctions imposed upon him. He'd been declared ineligible by the NCAA over his multitude of gambling violations.
It was found that he was making thousands of bets on everything from NCAA football to Romanian soccer. Sorsby even placed bets through friends' accounts or had friends place bets for him. Many of the wagers were placed when Sorsby was underage, thus making them illegal bets. He was also found to have bet on the Indiana Hoosiers when he was a QB on the squad. Sorsby admits to wagering over $90,000 during his NCAA career.
Law enforcement officials tipped off the NCAA to their findings on Sorsby's gambling habit, and the NCAA launched the investigation that led to Sorsby's ban. Once word of his gambling went public, Sorsby announced he was addicted to gambling and entered into a treatment program.
There was plenty of support for Sorsby
This sudden 180 by Sorsby regarding his football future caught everyone by surprise. Beyond the favorable ruling he'd received in a Lubbock, Texas, court, plenty of people were stepping up to go to bat for him if there was backlash over his reinstatement.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced that he would file suit against any organization that sought to prohibit Sorsby from playing, or impose sanctions against Texas Tech for suiting up the QB. Sorsby's lawyer, Jeffrey Kessler, also threatened to sue the Big 12 if the conference sanctioned the Red Raiders.
Sorsby's quantum shift appears to have taken place on Monday. Word came that the Big 12 Conference was filing a federal injunction against Texas Tech. The NCAA was also appealing the Texas court ruling and requesting that the appeals court expedite its decision.
"Universities should not field players who have bet on their own team's games in college athletics," the Big 12 said in a statement.
Texas Tech Supporting Sorsby
Texas Tach officials announced they plan to continue to provide Sorsby with support in his fight against problem gambling.
"When Brendan's lawsuit resulted in the granting of a temporary injunction, we found ourselves in a difficult situation," Texas Tech president Lawrence Schovanec and athletic director Kirby Hocutt said in a joint statement. "With his health and wellness as our top priority... we will continue to extend all available resources that Brendan had as a student and athlete to ensure his transition is as successful as possible."
